Móinéir, Irish Wines

+ Are there grapes in the wines?

No grapes were harmed in the making of this wine! We use approximately 1kg of Irish Strawberries, Blackberries, or Raspberries, instead of grapes in our wines, as these delicious berries grow naturally in Ireland.

+ Are the wines alcoholic and if so, what is the ABV?

Yes! The Blackberry and Strawberry Wines are 11% ABV and the Raspberry is 10% ABV.

+ Are the wines sweet?

Some people (prior to tasting the wines) assume that the wines will be super sweet, almost like Ribena or fruit juice. This is not the case at all! In fact, strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries have a natural tartness to them, when you think about it, with sweetness often not the overriding taste. Our wines are off-dry with the Raspberry Wine being the 'sweetest' of the 3.

+ What do the wines compare to? Rosé, red, white?

We struggle to answer this question as they are very different to typical wines, despite being made in the exact same manner! If we had to, we would compare the Blackberry Wine to a fruitier Red Wine and the Strawberry Wine to a Rosé. The Raspberry Wine cannot be compared to a typical Grape Wine, as it has an entirely unique flavour! Come join us for a Wine Tasting in our winery to see which is your favourite and understand just how unique and wonderful our Móinéir Wines truly are 😉

+ Where do you source your fruit?

Our fruit is sourced from local, wonderful suppliers who help make our wines so delicious. We source most of our fruit from Clarke’s in Stamullen, James Malone in Carlow, and Des Jeffares in Wexford, and forage our elderberries ourselves.

+ What cheeses pair best with your wines?

We recommend Smoked Knockanore with the Strawberry Wine and Crozier Blue with the Blackberry Wine. The Strawberry Wine is better with milder cheddars and goats cheese, and the Blackberry and Raspberry Wines are fab with everything from mild to strong cheeses - we love them with Gorgonzola!

+ Is fruit wine actually wine?

Yep! The berries that we use are selected from local Irish growers, and later gently pressed to release their rich juices. Fermentation, maturation and other natural processes occur with a lot of careful attention. This means that our wines are made in the exact same manner as a grape wine, just using berries instead, and therefore, can be considered a fruit wine!

+ Are all 3 of your wines vegan?

You bet!

+ Are the wines sustainable?

Sustainability is at the heart of our work so we can very proudly say that it is. Our fruit is either foraged or selected exclusively from top-quality growers, and the fruit pulp that remains after the berries are pressed, is broken down into microbially-rich compost, used for food production. At the winery we make every effort to be as energy-efficient as possible and have committed to source our electricity from the electricity supplier with the lowest greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, while minimizing and recycling all cardboard and plastics. We are also proud members of Bord Bia's Origin Green, and Pamela chairpersons Wicklow Naturally, an initiative that celebrates local sustainable producers who ensure that best practice, authenticity, and the highest quality of food and drink products are provided. We are also planning on launching a carbon offsetting programme this coming year. Keep your eyes peeled!

+ Are the wines sparkling?

No, but they are lovely mixed with a sparkling drink! King Charles and Camila were treated to a glass of our Raspberry Wine combined with a Camel Valley Brut from Cornwall when they visited the English Market in Cork in June 2018, and we gotta say it was an amazing combo.

Wine Tastings & Winery Tours

+ Where is the winery and how do I get there for my tour?

We are located in Unit 8, Newtown Business and Enterprise Centre, Newtownmountkennedy, Co. Wicklow, A63 DT61. If Google Maps fails to locate our exact location, please follow these directions:

If you are coming from Dublin...

  1. Take exit 12 off the N11, where you will immediately hit a roundabout
  2. Take the second exit off this roundabout and the third exit off the following roundabout
  3. Drive under the underpass to the next roundabout and take the first exit
  4. Follow this road, passing the petrol station on your left - the road will bend and lead you into Newtownmountkennedy village shortly after
  5. You will notice a pub on your left called 'Druid's Well' - you will then know you are getting close
  6. Roughly 0.25km up the road, you will notice a pet store on the right named 'Pet Bliss', alongside an open field - turn right off the main road onto this road (Pet Bliss will now be on your left). Once you pass this building, you will be able to see our unit (Unit 8) from the road - keep this in mind for following steps
  7. Take the left turn prior to Wicklow Wolf Brewery, into the industrial estate
  8. Once you take this left turn, take the next left turn and follow this road until you come to a junction
  9. Turn left at this junction. Essentially you will go entirely around both buildings to the other side (parallel to the road you were just on), where our winery can be found (which you could see from the main road, as mentioned in point 6).
  10. You have arrived!

If you are coming from Wexford...

  1. Take Exit 13
  2. Follow this road until you see a caravan dealer on your left hand side followed by a brick building
  3. Take a left at Pet Bliss and follow steps above (from point 6)

+ Is there a vineyard?

As we do not use grapes (at all) in our wines, we do not have a vineyard. Instead, we have a working winery in Newtownmountkennedy, Co. Wicklow. Scrap the image you may have in your head of a vineyard in Southern France! (for real though! haha)

+ Can we bring our kids along with us? We can't find a babysitter!

Unfortunately, we cannot facilitate children at our winery - it is strictly 18+. As well as this, the winery is packed with many fragile items, or stacks of wine that could collapse and shatter, if hit off of. We can’t take any risks 😞

+ Can we bring our dog with us?

Unfortunately, we do not allow animals in our winery.

+ Can I buy tickets at the door?

As the Wine Tasting & Winery Tour spots for the day you arrive may be booked up, we only accept pre-bookings.

+ Can I get involved in the Wine Tasting if I am a vegan? Do you have substitutes for the cheeses and chocolates?

Of course you can! We appreciate and love all our vegan customers. Please email Celina if you require vegan alternatives.

+ Can I still get involved in the Winery Tour aspect of the experience if I am the designated driver for my group?

Of course you can! Once again, please email Celina if you would like to avail of a designated driver discount. You will then be able to experience the entire Winery Tour and educational aspect of the Wine Tasting alongside your friends, just minus the actual wine, cheese and chocolate tastings!

+ How long is the tour?

60-90 mins (depending on how chatty the group is!). This includes the guided winery tour and wine tasting.

+ Is the winery wheelchair accessible?

The winery, for the most part, is wheelchair accessible, but the mezzanine (where the tasting is carried out), is not, as it exists up a flight of stairs. The wine tasting can be carried out downstairs, upon request, which we would be delighted to facilitate, if necessary. Please let us know in advance of your travels, by emailing Celina.

+ I received a gift ticket off a friend. How do I redeem it?

If you received a Wine Tasting & Winery Tour gift ticket and are looking to book yourself in, you can redeem the ticket here. If you have a Wicklow Way Wines gift voucher, please email Celina, to redeem this voucher against Tasting & Tour tickets.

+ I lost my Wine Tasting & Winery Tour gift ticket! What do I do?

Don't stress! Please email Celina with any information you may remember (the name and/or email address of the individual who purchased the ticket/the gift ticket number). With this information, we may be able to locate your ticket. The more information you can provide, the better!

+ What are your opening hours?

Our pre-booked tours fall at 2pm and 3:30pm on Fridays (Friday availability is dependant on the time of year), and at 2pm, 3:30pm, and 5pm on Saturdays & Sundays (and at other times by appointment). If you are stopping by to pick up an order, please call Brett on 0876192851 prior to making the trip to ensure someone is available to meet with you.

+ What is your cancellation policy?

Notice of cancellation must be given 72 hours in advance of your booking. Bookings cancelled within this window cannot be rescheduled or refunded.

Hand Sanitiser

+ Is your hand sanitiser a spray, liquid, or gel?

Our hand sanitiser is a liquid product.

+ I run/manage a business and am looking for large quantities of hand sanitiser. Is that something you can facilitate?

Yes, of course! Please email Celina for a quote. If you find cheaper 5L containers on the Irish market, we may be able to price match. We would be delighted to speak with you and fulfil your needs so please get in touch.
